My Uncle Unknown... To Me

Pictured above, left to Right, My Mother, My Uncle Randy & My Aunt Sharon.

I don't know where this picture was taken, from the land scape and the time frame though I would have to say it was taken outside of Natoma, Kansas. The Hand writting here that was scanned in along with picture is that of my Cousin's Great-Grandmother, Ada. Ada marks the year as 1966, the kodak stamp on the front though is Aug 1965, which I don't think actually has anything to do with when the picture was taken or developed.

This picture is sad, because as you can tell from the writing on the back Randy died shortly after it was taken. He drown in a lake outside of Natoma.

I have always been curious about Randy. I've seen only a handful of pictures and from my Mom and Ronnie I've learned various bits about his character. He seemed to be a great little guy.

There is no way for me to really understand what his life meant nor what his passing took. I can only take a look at his brother and sisters that survived and imagine what could have been.

I can't fathom the idea of losing one of my siblings. They are such a part of me that I would never feel whole again.

I love Sharon's Children and Ronnies daughter greatly, to think that perhaps there could be another family of children like them, that would have been something.

The Chitter Chatter

It a bit chilly this morning. It's even a bit cold to type. I have a fresh cup of coffee on the desk to my left. A top my head is a black hat and around my neck is a black and red checkered scarf. It's California for crying out loud, but we have recently learned just how cold it can be here. It's been now one week since our state voted to take away a fundamental right from some of our best citizens.
I've just viewed Kieth Olbermans Special Comment on the passing of Prop 8. You could view it here:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/vp/27652443#27652443

and for those who prefer to read:

Everyone deserves the same chance at permanence and happiness
Finally tonight as promised, a Special Comment on the passage, last week, of Proposition Eight in California, which rescinded the right of same-sex couples to marry, and tilted the balance on this issue, from coast to coast.

Some parameters, as preface. This isn't about yelling, and this isn't about politics, and this isn't really just about Prop-8. And I don't have a personal investment in this: I'm not gay, I had to strain to think of one member of even my very extended family who is, I have no personal stories of close friends or colleagues fighting the prejudice that still pervades their lives.

And yet to me this vote is horrible. Horrible. Because this isn't about yelling, and this isn't about politics. This is about the human heart, and if that sounds corny, so be it.

If you voted for this Proposition or support those who did or the sentiment they expressed, I have some questions, because, truly, I do not understand. Why does this matter to you? What is it to you? In a time of impermanence and fly-by-night relationships, these people over here want the same chance at permanence and happiness that is your option. They don't want to deny you yours. They don't want to take anything away from you. They want what you want—a chance to be a little less alone in the world.

Only now you are saying to them—no. You can't have it on these terms. Maybe something similar. If they behave. If they don't cause too much trouble. You'll even give them all the same legal rights—even as you're taking away the legal right, which they already had. A world around them, still anchored in love and marriage, and you are saying, no, you can't marry. What if somebody passed a law that said you couldn't marry?

I keep hearing this term "re-defining" marriage. If this country hadn't re-defined marriage, black people still couldn't marry white people. Sixteen states had laws on the books which made that illegal in 1967. 1967.

The parents of the President-Elect of the United States couldn't have married in nearly one third of the states of the country their son grew up to lead. But it's worse than that. If this country had not "re-defined" marriage, some black people still couldn't marry black people. It is one of the most overlooked and cruelest parts of our sad story of slavery. Marriages were not legally recognized, if the people were slaves. Since slaves were property, they could not legally be husband and wife, or mother and child. Their marriage vows were different: not "Until Death, Do You Part," but "Until Death or Distance, Do You Part." Marriages among slaves were not legally recognized.

You know, just like marriages today in California are not legally recognized, if the people are gay.

And uncountable in our history are the number of men and women, forced by society into marrying the opposite sex, in sham marriages, or marriages of convenience, or just marriages of not knowing, centuries of men and women who have lived their lives in shame and unhappiness, and who have, through a lie to themselves or others, broken countless other lives, of spouses and children, all because we said a man couldn't marry another man, or a woman couldn't marry another woman. The sanctity of marriage.

How many marriages like that have there been and how on earth do they increase the "sanctity" of marriage rather than render the term, meaningless?

What is this, to you? Nobody is asking you to embrace their expression of love. But don't you, as human beings, have to embrace... that love? The world is barren enough.

It is stacked against love, and against hope, and against those very few and precious emotions that enable us to go forward. Your marriage only stands a 50-50 chance of lasting, no matter how much you feel and how hard you work.

And here are people overjoyed at the prospect of just that chance, and that work, just for the hope of having that feeling. With so much hate in the world, with so much meaningless division, and people pitted against people for no good reason, this is what your religion tells you to do? With your experience of life and this world and all its sadnesses, this is what your conscience tells you to do?

With your knowledge that life, with endless vigor, seems to tilt the playing field on which we all live, in favor of unhappiness and hate... this is what your heart tells you to do? You want to sanctify marriage? You want to honor your God and the universal love you believe he represents? Then Spread happiness—this tiny, symbolic, semantical grain of happiness—share it with all those who seek it. Quote me anything from your religious leader or book of choice telling you to stand against this. And then tell me how you can believe both that statement and another statement, another one which reads only "do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

You are asked now, by your country, and perhaps by your creator, to stand on one side or another. You are asked now to stand, not on a question of politics, not on a question of religion, not on a question of gay or straight. You are asked now to stand, on a question of love. All you need do is stand, and let the tiny ember of love meet its own fate.

You don't have to help it, you don't have it applaud it, you don't have to fight for it. Just don't put it out. Just don't extinguish it. Because while it may at first look like that love is between two people you don't know and you don't understand and maybe you don't even want to know. It is, in fact, the ember of your love, for your fellow person just because this is the only world we have. And the other guy counts, too.

This is the second time in ten days I find myself concluding by turning to, of all things, the closing plea for mercy by Clarence Darrow in a murder trial.

But what he said, fits what is really at the heart of this:

"I was reading last night of the aspiration of the old Persian poet, Omar-Khayyam," he told the judge. It appealed to me as the highest that I can vision. I wish it was in my heart, and I wish it was in the hearts of all: So I be written in the Book of Love; I do not care about that Book above. Erase my name, or write it as you will, So I be written in the Book of Love."

Back to me.

This has been such a hard week for so many people. This isn't an issue that is really very complicated at all. There are no logical arguments on the other side. We all know where this is going. As long as humanity is going to survive we will continue to grow in our understanding and acceptance. I'm convinced we are going to continue as a race therefore I believe in the foreseeable future this issue will be put to rest and that we will move on in a better and more understanding world. It's happening all around us. Perhaps it's all that more painful to not have it now. People are in love now. They don't want the sting of a day late and equal protection short. We need to grow up and live up to the ideals we profess to hold sacred.

A passing moment

I just pulled up to a stoplight at vineland and oxnard. I was paused waiting for a green. I noticed the man in the vehicle to my left looking in my direction. I smiled at him and he smiled back.

The sun is shining today and the air feels clean.

A Shamful Thing

I didn't do enough. I didn't work the phone banks and I didn't knock on doors. I Apologize to everyone who now can't marry the person they love. I didn't do enough.

I have an unclean dirty feeling today. I want to be celebrating our national victory but it's so much more an empty feeling than I could imagine.

It's a sad day for California. It won't last. Human beings will get past this, we are already so close. You can't continue to have immoral laws. We've learned this time and time again. This petty hatred is no match. History will judge the fear that has prompted this absurd action. This won't even make sense to our people in 50 years, the real kick though is that it doesn't even make sense now, it never has.

I'm sorry.

I raise my glass, tip back my head and laugh. Its not a snide laugh nor an I told you so. Its a laugh of recognition, a vigorous nod to the idea that we can still as a country rise to occasion.
Tonight we have elected a man that I would be nervous to have a beer with. A man who has worked hard his entire life. A man who values the constitution of the united states of america.

I'm nervous for Barack Obama, and I'm nervous for this country which I have never stopped loving. This is not a great time to be an american, nor an earthling. We are at critical mass. We need to be this involved from here on out, we can no longer rest on the achievements of the past. The infrastructure that those before us built is strained and needs replaced and improved. The good standing that our country once held in the world is gone and needs rebuilt but in a new inclusive spirit.

I'm so proud of everyone I know. You all worked so hard to inform each other and to remain engaged in a system that had seemed to forsake us. We need to continue to work this hard. We have to do better.

Proposition 8 is winning with 22 percent reporting. This makes is wrong. A constitutional amendment which removes a right is something the framers of our state of our country never intended. This is a very scary sign. Today it is gay marriage, what will it be next?

Projected Elected

I sit here shaking with a glass of campaign in my hand. I'm waiting to drink. I'm waiting to here a man speak.

I'm waiting to hear results on the california voter propositions.
I am so glad I'm in this moment. I'm in a room surrounded by friends sitting next to the woman I love looking forward to a new day.

Fw: I'm so excited and so nervous.

I'm so excited and so nervous. Blogging from my phone. It appears Obama has won. It appears the dark ride is coming to a close.

Fingers cross

I'm still nervous on the edge of my seat hoping we hace defeated prop 8. Crosses fingers. Crosses heart.

Will it be worth what we've all been through?

It's been bad to live in this country in the past 8 years. It's been a very dark ride. We've seen our quality of life decline and our standing in the world plummet. We have disconnected from one another. Each seperate community has become an island where generally only one way of thinking is tolerated. We have broken down into small tribes where each member is only allowed to fall on one side of what is for all purposes really an arbitrary line. Today that line is getting crossed, hopefully in a very real and tangible way.

IT's so very exciting to be me today. My sister is a volunteer poll worker in Kansas City. I've been texting her, and wouldn't you know she's already been at the center of action... here is what the news has had to say about what happened in her ward:

"In Missouri, another battleground state, at least three precincts in Kansas City's 5th Ward received the wrong registration books from election officials. Shelley McThomas, director of the city's Board of Elections, said cover jackets indicating ward, precinct and sequence numbers were mixed up when the books were assembled.
Don't Miss

"They looked like the right books, but when the judges opened them this morning they discovered, no, these pages aren't the right pages," McThomas said.

New books were printed at the Board of Elections after the discovery of the problem, and they were delivered by deputies to anxious judges and voters in the 5th Ward, she said"

She said it was chaos for the first two hours they were opened but by 8am it was all back on track. By 1:00 pm already half of the people registered in her precient had voted.

My parents voted last friday. My brother was out doing the lords work at 6am this morning speaking to people about no on prop 8.

I have to wait until 5:30 to vote this evening. I'm hoping that all the effort of so many people will have paid off. I'm hoping for an end to the dark ride we've been on. I'm hoping for hope and voting for change.

Okay October Already

Hi all! This isn't going to be deep or meaningful but I need to make an effort to try and ease back into blogging on a semi-regular basis, I've been chided now on several fronts and those chides are not without merit, so I begin, slowly to blog yet again.

It's an unusual Monday morning today, for I am fresh and at the ready. These feeling though has been occuring much more often. I'm listening to the exciting sounds of All Classical 89.9 KBPS Portland, Oregon's only all-classical radio station. The same station I spend many fall work days listening to. I enjoy this music so very much. It's music outside my ken, therefore so enjoyable. I can just appreciate the experience of being a listener and not a creator. How delightful, perhaps this is what inspires me this morning to put keyboard to pixel and jot down a bit of the moment.

My work life is still in a state of flux. I have made great progress here, handling a far greater part of this company than I ever truly thought I would. It's rewarding in many ways, the least of which for the time being is financial, but here is to the hope that after I prove myself over a longer period of time this part will take off. I suppose I was always a bit over paid and certainly over benefieted in the past anyway. I do find myself enjoying work more now. I have developed good working relationships with our technicians and customers, it's good to feel like I have a handle on whats going on with the company I work for hour by hour, and to know that I'm able to help in a big way. I'm proud of the work our company does and the honest way we go about doing it.

After seven and a half months of running in runyon and nichols canyon I have finally worn my old shoes out nearly completely. Yesterday using money that I made doing manual labor on saturday I bought myself a nice new pair of running shoes. They are the same brand which I used for running in high school, it's amazing how much like home they feel. I slipped them on in the store and I ws sort of taken back to a different time and place and to the many miles I've ran before. Tonight is their first test on the trails, I'm ever so excited.

This election season has been amazing. It's been what has stopped my blogging more than anything else. I've tried many times to sit down and write a very thoughtful piece on my feelings but It's really been rather duanting, I'm so deeply entrenched in this process. My obsession is really becoming that of a junkie. I will keep this brief, I won't even begin to touch upon the mountian of passion that lies behind it, nor the hours of frustration that I have been put through by their opponents and the uninformed around this great nation. For the record, I endorse Barack Obama and Joe Biden for President and Vice President of the United States of America.

There... I've said it. Let the media feeding frenzy begin. Move over Colin Powell.

More to come this week.

A Sidelong Thought

The other night I was watching Lost and I was already thirsty. Then I saw someone on the show pass one of their grimy water bottles to another person and take a drink. For those of you not in the know Lost occurs on a desert island, therefore fresh water is at a premium. Since I was thirsty I then got up and got myself a drink of easily available, fresh, filtered water.

Later that night I was rinsing my face after I washed it and I noticed I was gritting my teeth. I then thought about those poor stranded actors on lost and decided that I shouldn't take fresh clean tap water for granted, and enjoy the process instead of gritting through it. I might one day be on a hit tv show playing an actor suffering through grimy make up all day, those people really would like to rinse their face in clear, clean water.

Six Months and Running

Yessir, it's been six months since I've taken up the task of actively improving my life. I feel good. I have ran at least four days a week for the entire time, I've been taking steps to clear up my financial matters. I've worked six days a week for all but a couple of weeks. It's been good for me and I feel great.

This past weekend was nice. We had a couple of nice birthday events for Angela and got to see many friends. We also got to see the new Batman Movie at the Imax theater and I really deeply enjoyed that.

I had a meeting with my book club people at a place called Chaya in Beverly Hills. We discussed the book Jazz by Toni Morrison, which I enjoyed. It was a nice discussion and helped to reaffirm my commitment to my book club. It was my turn to choose the book and Author, with the stipulation that the author be a Nobel prize winner. I Chose the Tin Drum by Gunter Grass. I've always wanted to read it so it's perfectly motivating for me. I was able to go pick up a used copy for just 2.75 yesterday afternoon and the first chapter has already thrilled me a great deal.

Still Humping the American Dream

I have now returned from Las Vegas and a grand time was had! The excitement of the post previous to this one continued pretty much through the entire trip and even sustained itself through the drive home and the next day at work since I had Wicked at the Pantages theater with Angela to look forward to all day Tuesday.
Here is a nice picture dump to give you as small sense of how it felt and tasted to be there.
Okay, well this isn't all about the trip, this is actual a photo taken during the brief visit I had with Carrie last week at Devin and Dylan's. Faithful readers of this blog will remember Carrie from some letters transcribed here a few years back. Carrie is now doing excellent and on the other side of the law, law school to be exact. She is really doing fabulous and I thought it worth noting for those following the larger story. Life can really take some hard shots at a person, but Carrie can take the best that anyone can throw at her and make it work. Yay!
Here we are, taking a break from travels to enjoy a bite at Del Taco somewhere near Victorville. This photo is designed to show the fabulous nature of the french braid which Angela sported gracefully the entire trip. Special thanks to her receptionist at work Ashley who was kind enough to make this nice addition to her already lovely head before we left, I for one very much enjoyed it.
Devin and Dylan are pictured here at Canter's Deli in the Mirage. Canter's Los Angeles is pictured elswhere in my blog so I thought there was some nice full circle elements at play in posting the Vegas version here. However Canter's LA sees much more business at 1 a.m. than this one appears to. It's a rather cute picture of the boys though, and they see a lot of business after 1 a.m.! :)
Here is a shot after we had Arrived. We stayed at the Venetian with Dennis, the boys stayed at Circus Circus, Where we would all be staying had the Nazi's won the war... I sadly grabbed no pictures with Dennis with my phone, probably because anytime he was around I had a shot of tequila in one hand and a 16 ounce of budlight in the other. This photo of Devin and I took place as we walked from the Mirage to Caesar's Palace.
As did this picture of Dylan and Angela. Dennis joined us at the Mirage but made the wise decision to leave us just before these pictures occurred. He was in town working a convention for the lingerie convention. He takes pictures of nearly naked women for a living and stays in some pretty fabulous suites while setting up convention booths of some of those photos. A fascinating occupation if ever I've heard of one.
Here is a morning after shot of the suite, note the fainting couch sculpture in the back left of the photograph.
I will on occasion smoke a cigar but I never enjoy it and I really only do it in tribute to my father, it reminds me of many wonderful evenings we spent on the deck we built in Olathe having a beer or wine and catching up on the days events.
The bed in our suite was sweet. Soft white sheets. Angela and I developed a game where one person would turn on their side and say, "do you know what I like early in the morning?", then the other person would run and take a flying leap onto the bed. From the persective of the person laying in bed it was just a funny little blur flying from the other side of the room. Dennis even enjoyed a few rounds of this game.
I just liked the look of the buildings and the sky here. This was taken from the pool deck of the venetian.
Don't Jump!
This photo says something about Las Vegas, what does it mean to you? Comment below~!
Here I am, enjoying the Suite, enjoying my life and particularly this new hat which Angela bought for me.
Angela and I in the Beatles Revolution lounge. Dennis, Angela and I enjoyed cocktails here while we waited for Devin and Dylan to finish up eating at Japonaise, where they had gone in hopes of meeting a guy we grew up with in Paradise.
This was pretty much the last trip related picture my Camera Phone recorded. From here we went to O' sheash, where the drinks are cheap and freely flowing. We had a blast there. Then we travled by Taxi to the Griffen in downtown. This night just got crazy and I'm so glad to have been a part of it.
Of course this fellow was missing us while we were away, so we had to get back to see him.
And how could you deny this?

This beautiful shot is taken at the taco bell on vine, where we went to have a small snack before going to see Wicked. Lovely.

Bye now~!

Getting ready to leave!

A breath of the fresh!

Hi all, it has been too few and far between. I'm about to embark on a mission to las Vegas, within the hour I say I'll be hitting the road. It's very exciting stuff you know! I have not been in some time and I'm very excited.
For the second time in my life I will travel to Las Vegas to meet Dennis, a friend from years ago and thousands of miles away. I can count on one finger the number of times that I have seen Dennis in the last six years, and that was a brief sighting in a city that I had never seen either, therefore I feel our reconnection got a bit lost in the cyclone. Dennis will be in town on some sort of business that he has declined so far to expand upon,he has only gone on record to say that he will tell me in person and that I will laugh. How very giddy I am!

The last trip I took to Vegas to meet Dennis was a whirlwind, and I don't recall very much of it, but probably more than most people remember their trips to Las Vegas. At the time I was living with Devin in Winnetka, working at Ralph's market. Devin and I Drove my car, accompanied by a co-worker mine named Matt, who has completely disappeared from my life.

I blog this all not because it's interesting but because I am excited! It's nice to have friends that pop in and out of your life. It's nice to get out of town. It's nice to go to Las Vegas. It's nice to be able to travel somewhere with Angela because she packs better than anyone I have ever met.

Can you tell I am excited?

I have been working hard at work lately and I feel like I'm really coming into my own there. I handle many situations as they come up because if I don't handle them there is really only one other person there who can, and he's got too much to do as it is. It makes me feel useful, which isn't really as fun as feeling excited, like I'm feeling now.

This is interesting, have you noticed that I'm really blogging present tense, which is something I seldom do? I don't even think this post began that way, oh yes, maybe it did.

So I assume the added work at work is what has really cut down on my blogging, which is why I'm typing the rare blog not from work. If you are my employer and you happen to be reading this I don't blog from work, I only work at work, saying that I blog from work is just a joke I have for those people who read my blog from their work . If my employers happen to be reading this I would bet dollars to doughnuts they are reading it from work anyway.

It's getting near the time to go and I am very excited! I've mentioned this before, yes?

I have been running ever so much lately. I've recently taken a new approach to my running, rather than running fast and killing myself I have started running slower but steadier and over a bit longer period of time and mileage. I'm actually a bit more exhausted at the end of it but it seems to be a little easier to confront it each day knowing that the suffering will be gradual.

Okay, the excitement is getting the better of me. I must take a few moments for me and prepare.

I will type here again, maybe even from my phone during the trip.

Eight Oh Eight Oh Eight

As I wrote the date for the first time today I was taken back to certain memory fragments from my childhood, and one repeated phrase that once used to hold special meaning.

As school children living on farm in Western Kansas about 15 miles from our grade school it was necessary for us to get a ride into town and then get on a school bus to venture one town over to our grade school. When we first started school it was my fathers job to get us up and around and then drive us into town to meet the bus. Why I remembered this today is that we had to leave by 8:08 am in order to catch the bus. So each morning when time had finally ran out at home and we had to go get into the jeep to drive into town Dad would yell out, "Eight oh eight oh Eight!", and we'd all go. I don't know why he added the extra Oh eight, I guess it had a better ring.

Dad was always making things fun for us on the way. The sunlight in western Kansas at that time in the morning is particularly stunning, and perhaps because there are so few things out there to cast a shadow, the things that do cast a shadow are all the more inpressive. My dads brown and orange jeep was one such particular shadow casting object. As it rolled down Highway K-18 the sun would be shining and casting a perfect shadow of the vehicle in the grass ditch just next to us, sometimes slightly behind us. As shadows do it would go with us the entire drive to school. The effect was made all the more personal for us kids during certain months of the year when the top was off the jeep and each passanger could wave their arms above their head and locate there own silouette.
Dad reffered to the family of shadows that followed us by our last name spelled backwards, since shadow images like mirror images are backwards of sorts. Each member of the family had their own shadow family member and it was their name said backwards. I remember really liking the way my shadow's name sounded "Nodnarb", it was so fitting.

Sometimes when going about my business of adulthood I will catch a glimpse of Nodnarb, he's bigger now all grown up, but I will wave to him and he waves back and it makes me feel a bit like a child.

Life is too weird

If someone had told me when I was 18 that one day I'd be sitting in an office in north hollywood, having just lead a scheduling meeting for a small but profitable company, listening to the president of my company sing along with a song written and recorded by my uncle Ronnie over and over again I very much doubt I would have believed you.

This is exactly what is happening. My boss Craig who normally presides over the morning schedule meeting was out to an appointment. He gave me one paper with one job needing done and left me in charge. I actually pulled it off in a manner which I felt the technicians appreciated and still got the job done.

Yesterday Ronnie sent me a real old timey country song he'd written having a little go at a friend of his who didn't deal with his wife leaving him very well. Ronnie finally got around to recording that song Monday and over the weekend. It's called I ain't there and I love it. Just a classic in my opinion.
I was playing it at work yesterday and my country loving boss came running out of her office wanting to know what it was. Within the first listen she was singing harmony on the chorus.
At the end of the day yesterday I emailed her a copy of the song, she came in this morning with an entire duet part worked out. Now she is in her office singing over and over again and I'm in a small corner of my own private heaven. It's great to be surrounded by pieces of the people you care about, especially when they come out of the blue and knock your skirt up.
I'm grateful that life will always find ways to be weird.

Update 1:
It keeps getting odd...
Ronnie just got online and told me today is his birthday... the big 6 oh. Happy birthday Ronnie!

Quickie

Hello! Where hath gone July? My increased job duties have taken a bite out of my blog, and this is a good thing. I have been enjoying coming to work more and I've been doing a lot more while I am here. There are still many new things that I can learn to do here, I just keep truckin', trustin' that down the road it will really pay off.

I have continued to run at least 4 days a week. It's been amazing. I am feeling very fit on certain days. Last night for instance was a very good run. I ran what I consider to be my hard loop, and I basically kicked it's ass. To be able to stop on my drive home and face a difficult run is really helping me maintain a sort of mental physical balance, it's hard for me to imagine that I basically took five years off of running.

Angela and I have been overhauling my wardrobe. I left my last relationship with barely anything but my life, which was more than I had at times thought I would leave it with. I've been working most Saturdays at my bosses, 8 and 9 hour days sweating in the backyard for extra cash. Angela has really made making me happy with my wardrobe a priority and she is rather talented as a stylist. This past Monday we went to the Bev Cen and walked away with many items which I am very happy with. Now when I open my closet I'm thrilled.

Tonight we go see the band Chromeo at The Henry Fonda Theater. My god I've always wanted to go to the Fonda, and the fact that it's Chromeo makes it all the better. I'm so very excited. Maybe this is why I woke up feeling like sunshine today?

This past Saturday we went to a party in an honest to god castle in the hills above Los Feliz. It was SNAZZY!

These Lovely Photo's were taken by new friend and fab Photographer, Smashly Walters

Another recent obsession is the Edison Downtown for Lucent Dossier's night. It's every other Wednesday and so worth the cost of admission.
